projects Vanilla Uganda
Uganda is a promising location for vanilla bean cultivation, known for producing high-quality beans and having two harvest seasons annually. The country’s warm and humid climate offers favorable conditions for the crop’s growth. While it is a great source of income, it is a laborious crop, requiring extensive hand pollination, meticulous care, and a long curing period. Factors like price fluctuations, market oversaturation, and the need for specialized knowledge and resources further complicate the tedious nature of vanilla farming.
In the past few years, I have worked on a couple of development projects, looking at the sector, and here, you will see some of the vanilla-related images from different places in Uganda.
The first one is the Vines project, a five-year initiative of the Catholic Relief Services, designed to make Uganda the world’s next leading supplier of high-quality vanilla, increasing exports from 50 to 350 Metric tons per year by 2025. The program aimed to transform the lives of 16,200 farmers directly and strengthen 836 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, as well as 25 processing companies that support the Vanilla market system.
I also worked with Enimiro, a vanilla buying company dedicated to fostering the well-being and vitality of farming communities in Uganda, driving impactful social, economic, and environmental sustainability.
By providing farmers with essential resources and ongoing education, Enimiro ensures high-quality products that are consistent, equitable, and sustainable, catering to the needs of companies and consumers who value responsible sourcing.
