Mukasa Jackson loops vanilla in his garden. Mukasa Jackson started growing vanilla in 2002. He has seen prices drop and rise but this has not deterred him from growing vanilla. He says that even at its lowest price, vanilla still fetches more money per kilogram than any other crop. A resident of Namakandwa village in Kayunga village, and a proud father and grandfather, Jackson has been able to build a house, educate his children, start up other business, and is well known in the village because of vanilla growing.“At one point, I got Shs50 million from selling vanilla ($13,000) in one season. It changed my life. I call vanilla gold because it has been my support,” said Jackson. © Jjumba Martin for CRS 2022.

Uganda's vanilla industry is projected to experience significant growth, and hopefully, the revenue will reflect on the farmers, improving their livelihoods. When farmers increase their incomes, they can reinvest in their families, eat healthier food, pay for their children's education and diversify their operations, leading to further income growth. © Jjumba Martin 2023.
